1,520 Spring Assemblies for a Chemical Plant

PT&P recently manufactured 1,520 PTP-2 and PTP-4 spring hanger assemblies designed specifically for a furnace application. These custom variable springs have welded components as opposed to bolted components found in standard assemblies. Due to the space limitation within the furnace, the spring coils were set in a welded housing which allows for the springs to be closely oriented within a smaller spatial envelope. The pipe hanger assemblies are made from carbon steel, consisting of variable spring, rod, and riser clamp components. Instead of galvanizing, the assemblies were coated with a red-oxide primer due to the high temperature operating conditions of the furnace. This prevents the possibility of molten zinc (from the galvanizing process) contaminating the furnace tubes.

The springs are designed for loads of 143 to 660 lbs. and for total travel ranging from 3/4 to 2". Each assembly was pre-assembled to ensure free movement throughout the spring’s travel range before welding the bottom closure plate. Prior to shipment, all assemblies were calibrated to determine the exact spring rate and then were set to the customer’s designated cold load position. These springs are then located and installed into the furnace based on the spring rate.

PT&P Provides Variable Springs to an Oil Refinery

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. has designed and manufactured over 177 tons of supports for the Chad/Cameroon Development Project in Chad, Africa. Adjustable Base Pipe Supports designed to support pipe size ranging from 3 to 18" in diameter were one type of the many supports fabricated for this project.

PTEach of the hot-dipped galvanized pipe stands (pictured at left) has an 8"x8" base plate and a midrange height of 12". The pipe stands allow for a maximum travel of +/- 3". These supports provide for easy adjustment in the field when supporting pipe trunnions on concrete pads or foundations. In addition, these pipe stands have a major advantage when the exact installation heights are not known at the remote job site.

Other supports including constants and variables spring hangers, rigid rod hangers, structural steel, FRP pads, and pre-insulated pipe supports were also manufactured in a range of different specifications and materials.

Emergency Request for Types B & E Stainless Steel Constants

Within a two-week span, PT&P designed and fabricated eight Stainless Steel, grade-304, types B & E Constants for a marine plant. These constants have a travel of 1 1/2 – 5" and are specified to carry 50 – 1540 lbs load. Stainless steel was requested due to the corrosive nature of the environment. PT&P also manufactured nine Carbon Steel types B & E Constants for this project.

Various Support Assemblies for a Power Generation Facility

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 85 support assemblies for a power generation facility in Georgia.   These assemblies consisted of Variable and Constant Assemblies and structures made with carbon steel and alloy material. The variable spring hanger assemblies have standard three-bolt clamps and lug attachments for the existing pipes. These variable spring hangers accommodate operating loads varying from 8,000 to 18,000 lb. and 1-1/2 " of upward travel. PT&P also manufactured a Fig.43 (heavy duty yoke u-bolt) for a 14" diameter pipe. Components of the Fig. 43 include yoke, U-bolt, shield, and lug. The structure (beam, plate, angle, and tube steel) was painted green as per the customer’s specifications.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured sixty nine Upthrust Constants for a construction site in Chad, Africa.  They range in constant size from 31-61 and are composed of A36 carbon steel. The applicable loads and travel for these constants are from 1,700 lbs.-17,000 lbs. and 3”-8”, respectively. The installed height for this job was much higher than our standard constants, so we had to customize them. By extending the height of our standard constant with an additional angle we were able to meet the installed height.

Variable Assemblies with Pre-Insulated Pipe Clamps

Variable Assemblies with Pre-Insulated Pipe ClampsPiping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured several variable assemblies with pre-insulated pipe clamps for a chemical company in Texas. These assemblies are constructed of galvanized carbon steel hangers and hardware with Marinite® insulation.  The fabricated clamps range in size from 10" to 30", insulation thickness of 1" to 8" and with spring hanger sizes 80-180 standard, double, and triple variable spring hangers.

Inspecting the Constant Spring Supports

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently designed and manufactured 200 U-Type upthrust constants for a geothermal plant in Hawaii. The constant pictured on the left has frame dimensions of W 40" x H 75" x L 142", a constant load of 9,888 lb. to 10,239 lb. and a design travel of 46". It also utilizes rollers and PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates to reduce the friction resulting from axial movements. All the constants in this project are composed of A36 carbon steel. Standard load testing and travel testing were conducted prior to shippment.

Special Application Variable Springs and Constant Supports

Special Application Variable Springs and Constant Supports

The three pictures above show materials being crated for shipment overseas. At the top center are pallets of variable springs designed for 10” of movement and 1000 pound load. This unusual combination of requirements is satisfied by an unusually long coil. This project required 700 of these variables. At the bottom center are constant supports designed for 14” of movement with loads near 2000 pounds. This large movement, unusual for this load, requires the large arc seen in the frame of the constant body. Two hundred of these constants were required. These spring supports are painted with a shop prime.

3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Pipe Clamps

3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Clamps

3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Clamps

The disc-spring arrestors provide resistance by utilizing disc springs (sometimes referred to as Belleville® washers) stacked in a series within the assembly housing to produce a specific spring rate.  By utilizing large (over 8 diameter) disc springs, very high spring rates may be obtained.  The arrestors are capable of operating in both tension and compression.

The housing, end bracket, and extension pieces of the spring arrestor are made form A-36 carbon steel. The disc springs are made from ASTM A-1075 spring steel. One clamp (for design temp. of 688 degrees F.) was made from carbon steel and two clamps (for design temp. of 1054 degrees F.) were fabricated from A-387 GR.22 Chrome-Moly steel.

The diameter of each disc spring was 9 with a thickness of 1. The overall pin-to-pin dimension for the assemblies varied with a minimum of 35 and a maximum length of 57. The maximum length that can be accommodated is 120. The clamps were made for 18 and 30 diameter pipes.

The shock arrestor will see a maximum operating load of 43,000 lbs. The spring rate of each arrestor was designed at 40,000 lb./in. The spring arrestors are designed for a maximum displacement of 2. The arrestors were tested to verify spring rate and to confirm the operation of the pipe hanger assembly.

The constants are made from A36 carbon steel and range in height from 4'-0 to 5'-0 and C-C dimension of 7'-0 to 8'-4.  They have a load capacity of 12,000 lbs. to 18,500 lbs. and a 4-5 travel capacity. Load setting and travel testing was conducted on the constants to ensure they met the customer's requirements.
