Horizontal Upthrust Constants for a Power Plant
[](http://www.flickr.com/photos/pipesupports/5188568328/)The horizontal upthrust [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) (Fig. PTP200-U) were fabricated from carbon steel and chrome-moly for a Heat Recovery Steam Generator. The constants range in sizes PTP-200 size 3 to 65 and weigh from 24 lbs to 1,300 lbs. They support loads of 100 lbs to 8,100 lbs. The constants support pipes and equipment subjected to vertical movement due to thermal expansion at locations where transfer of stress to other supports or equipment can be critical. Horizontal upthrust constants are utilized in areas where horizontal travel is unacceptable. Standard testing was completed for performance and quality assurance.

Upthrust 200-U Type Constants for an Oil Refinery

The [upthrust constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) (PTP Fig. 200-U) were fabricated from A36 carbon steel. Weighing at 4,150 lbs each, they measure 94” long, 27” wide, and 43” tall. They support loads from 90,700 lbs to 93,000 lbs with 4” of vertical travel. In addition, they are custom designed with extra supporting points for heavier loads. They are used to support the piping system from beneath the pipeline. Upthrust constants only allow for vertical travel and are used where horizontal travel is unacceptable. Standard load and travel testing was completed to assure quality and performance.

Upthrust U-Type Constants for Plant in Mexico
The [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html)' dimensions are 25” x 56” with 17” pipe OD, and 29” x 68” with 21” pipe OD. These constants have a loaded capacity of 8,400 to 17,800 lbs. This constant is designed to support piping from below. The tests that were conducted on this product were standard loading and travel testing to ensure quality and performance. The constant is manufactured from A36 carbon steel.

They are designed to operate in temperatures from -40° F to 660° F. The unique construction of the constants permits extensive vertical travel, ranging from 20.5 to 26. Standard load and adjustment testing was performed to ensure quality prior to shipping.

PTP-100 Type B Constants
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently fabricated 48 PTP-200 type U and 54 PTP-100 type B constants for an oil refinery in Texas. The PTP 200 type U with base support [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) are designed for operating loads ranging from 650 lbs. to 7700 lbs. and a travel range of 3" to 4". They are fabricated out of A36 carbon steel with dimensions ranging from 15"x22" to 27"x38". The PTP 100 type B constants are fabricated from A36 carbon steel with dimensions ranging from 11.5"x23" to 12"x29" and total travel of 3" to 4". These constants are designed for operation loads ranging from 1100 lbs. to 2800 lbs. Space restrictions required a customized compact design. Standard load testing was performed to ensure product quality prior to shipping.

44,000 lb. load Horizontal Upthrust Constant
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently fabricated horizontal upthrust [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) for loads ranging from 24,000 lb. to 44,000 lb. These Fig. PTP 200 type U constants are designed for a travel range of 4" to 4 ½". They are fabricated from A36 carbon steel with dimensions ranging from 60"x52" to 80"x52". To meet customer specified installation heights, angles were added to the base of each constant. Load testing was performed to ensure product quality prior to shipping.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured sixty nine Upthrust [Constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) for a construction site in Chad, Africa. They range in constant size from 31-61 and are composed of A36 carbon steel. The applicable loads and travel for these constants are from 1,700 lbs.-17,000 lbs. and 3”-8”, respectively. The installed height for this job was much higher than our standard constants, so we had to customize them. By extending the height of our standard constant with an additional angle we were able to meet the installed height.

Inspecting the Constant Spring Supports
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently designed and manufactured 200 U-Type upthrust [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) for a geothermal plant in Hawaii. The constant pictured on the left has frame dimensions of W 40" x H 75" x L 142", a constant load of 9,888 lb. to 10,239 lb. and a design travel of 46". It also utilizes rollers and PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates to reduce the friction resulting from axial movements. All the constants in this project are composed of A36 carbon steel. Standard load testing and travel testing were conducted prior to shippment.

F-Type Constants
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed, manufactured and delivered a total of 8 [constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/index.html) to a power plant in Mexico. The designs consisted of 4 Horizontal U-Types Upthrust (Figure 1) and 4 Vertical F-Types (Figure 2) that are to support 24-inch diameter pipes. Each consisted of different sizes. The constants are designed for loads of 2,839 lbs. to 8,963 lbs., for Total Travels ranging from 7 to 3 inches. Constants were painted CZ-11 per customer request.

68" In Height Vertical Upthrust Constants
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and built two, 68" in height [100 U-Type constants](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/constants/ptp-100u.htm) for a power plant in Mexico. The vertical upthrust constants were designed to support 48,500 lb. each with a total upward travel of 3". In order to prevent buckling of the constant housing, each constant was designed with five C7 x 14 3/4 lb. channels and a base plate of 26 3/8" x 33 1/4". These unique 100 U-Type upthrust constants were custom designed by PT&P to accommodate limited horizontal space requirement. The constants will be placed opposite to each other on a beam capable of supporting 99,000 lb. load of the pipe, plus the weight of the constants.
