These custom [fig. 2110, size 8 sway struts](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/sway/4adj.htm) are for a liquid filters manufacturer located in Mississippi. Both sway struts have a 128,000 lb. load capacity and are fabricated from carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanized finish. The sway struts measure 68-5/8" long and have a 4" diameter rod size. A load test was performed prior to an expedited shipping schedule of 1-1/2 weeks.

The 114" diameter, 3-piece [pipe clamp](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/pipe-clamps.htm) is fabricated from A36 carbon steel and the pins are stainless steel. The [sway strut](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/sway-struts.htm) is also fabricated from carbon steel and measures 24'-8" long. This assembly can support loads up to 27,200 lb. and will be used in an oil refinery in Louisianna.

 This week's feature is on [mechanical snubber assemblies](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/hydraulic/mech.htm) custom designed for an oil refinery in California. This project included twenty mechanical snubber assemblies with load ratings from 16,000 lb. to 40,000 lb. and lengths ranging from 65-1/2" to 103-1/2". Some of the snubbers were designed to double the standard stroke (up to 12") by using two MSA-10 sized snubbers back-to-back. All the assemblies were custom designed by adding a carbon steel pipe extension piece. Load tests were performed and the assemblies were shipped in just under four weeks.

Fronek Anchor/Darling, a division of PT&P, designed and manufactured [hydraulic snubbers](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/hydraulic-snubbers.htm) with protective boots for a hydro-sulfuric acid environment in a geothermal power plant. They measure 53-5/8" pin-to-pin with a 3-1/4" cylinder bore size and 6" stroke.
The snubbers are designed for an actual load of 15,400 lb., but have a rated load capacity of 20,000 lb. They are fabricated from carbon and alloy steel, and include two coats of epoxy-based paint. An activation velocity test was performed, along with a release rate and drag characteristics test.

These [hydraulic snubber assemblies](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/hydraulic/index.html) were designed with maximum load capacities ranging from 1700 lb. to 59,400 lb. All of the snubbers were provided with an overall stroke of 6” and were preset to the midpoint of the total stroke, meaning that during operation, these snubbers could accommodate piping deflections of +/- 3” from the installed position.
[](http://www.flickr.com/photos/pipesupports/5136262782/) The piston diameters range from 1-1/2" to 6" and the total assembly length ranges from 31-1/2" to 220". The largest assembly required a custom extension section to eliminate the risk of buckling under compression loads. Two-thirds of the assemblies included dual end brackets and the remaining assemblies included an end bracket/clamp combination. The housing, extension piece and end brackets are fabricated from carbon steel, while the cylinders, pins and two of the end brackets are fabricated from polished stainless steel. Standard "lock and bleed-down" tests were performed prior to shipping to a LNG processing facility in Peru.

Custom Sway Braces with Ball Joints for a Refinery
28 sway braces were custom designed from a combination of carbon steel and A-5160 spring steel. Custom design and fabrication was required due to the design loads and movements exceeding the largest standard [sway brace](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/vibration/index.html?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_content=textlink&utm_campaign=enews-potw-description) assembly. The application required ball joint ends because the angle of incline exceeded the maximum five degree angle. The largest of the sway braces was designed for an operating load of 10,000 lb. with a travel range of 5" in either compression or extension. Each sway brace was load and travel tested prior to shipping to ensure functionality throughout the entire travel range.

Custom Sway Brace Supports
The [sway braces](http://www.pipingtech.com/products/ptpcat/spring/vibration/index.html) will be used in pairs to support a 72" diameter cooling tower supply line via a common attachment point. The internal components and housing are fabricated from carbon steel, and A-5160 spring steel was used for the coil. Each sway brace has a spring rate of 10,100 lb/in. with an overall available travel of 3". The adjustable ends are configured so that one end bracket is interlocked with the mating end bracket of its sister sway brace; therefore, enabling them to be connected to the pipe by a single lug.

They allow free thermal movement during normal operations but restrain in abnormal circumstances such as with an earthquake. These snubbers were fabricated from carbon steel. They measure 2 1/2” x 24” and the yoke clamps have pipe sizes of 23” and 25”. Each snubber weighs 890 lb. and has a travel capacity of 24”. Designed for the support of a cryogenic line, these snubbers can handle loads of up to 2,900 lb.
