6600 lb. load PTP-4 Type C Variable Springs with Riser Clamps

PT&P recently designed and manufactured six, PTP-4-160 type C variable springs with riser clamps for an oil refinery in Texas.  These variable springs are constructed from carbon steel and designed to support loads of 6600 lb. with a total travel of 2". The clamps are fabricated from A 387 Gr. 22 alloy steel to fit 18" pipes. Dimensional and fit-up tests were performed on the variable springs and riser clamps prior to shipping.

Piping Technology and Products, Inc. recently designed and fabricated two 950 lb. load PTP-6 type F size 90 variable springs for an offshore oil rig.  These variable springs have an overall height of 33 1/2" and are designed for a travel range of 4". Each variable consists of an 8 5/8" dia. casing, a 13" square base plate, an 8" load flange and three spring coils with a 7 1/2" working range. All components are fabricated from carbon steel and are hot-dipped galvanized.

PTP-6 Carbon Steel Variable Springs

PT&P recently designed and manufactured PTP-6 Type G variable springs in size PTP 6-00-G for a power plant project in Colorado.  These variable springs are constructed from carbon steel with movement ranging from 1” to 2” and loads of 73 lbs and 52 lbs, respectively. They were tested prior to shipping for load and movement performance by using calibrated load cells.

1,520 Spring Assemblies for a Chemical Plant

PT&P recently manufactured 1,520 PTP-2 and PTP-4 spring hanger assemblies designed specifically for a furnace application. These custom variable springs have welded components as opposed to bolted components found in standard assemblies. Due to the space limitation within the furnace, the spring coils were set in a welded housing which allows for the springs to be closely oriented within a smaller spatial envelope. The pipe hanger assemblies are made from carbon steel, consisting of variable spring, rod, and riser clamp components. Instead of galvanizing, the assemblies were coated with a red-oxide primer due to the high temperature operating conditions of the furnace. This prevents the possibility of molten zinc (from the galvanizing process) contaminating the furnace tubes.

1,520 Spring Assemblies for a Chemical Plant

The springs are designed for loads of 143 to 660 lbs. and for total travel ranging from 3/4 to 2". Each assembly was pre-assembled to ensure free movement throughout the spring’s travel range before welding the bottom closure plate. Prior to shipment, all assemblies were calibrated to determine the exact spring rate and then were set to the customer’s designated cold load position. These springs are then located and installed into the furnace based on the spring rate.

Various Support Assemblies for a Power Generation Facility

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 85 support assemblies for a power generation facility in Georgia.   These assemblies consisted of Variable and Constant Assemblies and structures made with carbon steel and alloy material. The variable spring hanger assemblies have standard three-bolt clamps and lug attachments for the existing pipes. These variable spring hangers accommodate operating loads varying from 8,000 to 18,000 lb. and 1-1/2 " of upward travel. PT&P also manufactured a Fig.43 (heavy duty yoke u-bolt) for a 14" diameter pipe. Components of the Fig. 43 include yoke, U-bolt, shield, and lug. The structure (beam, plate, angle, and tube steel) was painted green as per the customer’s specifications.

Variable Assemblies with Pre-Insulated Pipe Clamps

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured several variable assemblies with pre-insulated pipe clamps for a chemical company in Texas. These assemblies are constructed of galvanized carbon steel hangers and hardware with Marinite® insulation.  The fabricated clamps range in size from 10" to 30", insulation thickness of 1" to 8" and with spring hanger sizes 80-180 standard, double, and triple variable spring hangers.

Special Application Variable Springs and Constant Supports

The three pictures above show materials being crated for shipment overseas. At the top center are pallets of variable springs designed for 10” of movement and 1000 pound load. This unusual combination of requirements is satisfied by an unusually long coil. This project required 700 of these variables. At the bottom center are constant supports designed for 14” of movement with loads near 2000 pounds. This large movement, unusual for this load, requires the large arc seen in the frame of the constant body. Two hundred of these constants were required. These spring supports are painted with a shop prime.

Variable Springs with Permanent Adjustment Travel Stops

Piping Technology & Products designed and manufactured these variable springs with permanent adjustment travel stops for a refinery in Texas.

These types of travel stops are used to allow ease of installation, provide a means for field load adjustment within the working range of the spring, and allow the springs to be "locked" easily whenever they are taken out of service for shutdowns or refurbishment of the system.

For this requisition, a total of 23 variable springs with adjustable travel stops were fabricated.  The springs are made from carbon steel and the adjustment rods are made from A-325 high strength bolt material.  The springs ranged in size from PTP-1-60-F to PTP-2-180-F size spring.  The largest springs were set for an operating load of 12,900 lbs. and a hydrotest load of 14,000 lbs. and a maximum travel of ½.  All of the springs were tested in the load cell to insure proper operation. Per the customer's request, these springs were supplied at an expedited delivery of 3 weeks.

58,000 lb. Load Variable Spring Assemblies

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured two custom built variable spring assemblies using heavy duty spring coils and fabricated hardware components. The loads, as specified by the customer, were greater than the maximum operating loads for our largest (PT&P size 220) standard variable springs. In order to meet the customer's requirements, a custom variable spring was designed and fabricated using a larger spring coil normally used only in constant spring assemblies. The specially fabricated variable spring was 20 in diameter with a standing height of 51 and the hanging components (rod, turnbuckle, clevis) were 3 1/2 diameter pieces.  The spring rate was 3232 lb./in.  All the pipe hanger assembly components were made from carbon steel. The installed (cold) load was 58,000 lbs. and the operating (hot) load was 61,700 lbs. The calculated movement from cold to hot was 1 1/8 down. The variable spring was tested in the load cell to insure proper operation and also to set the cold load to the specifications provided by the customer.

Variable Springs to Meet Travels Needed to Support Furnace Tubes of a Hydrogen Reformer

Piping Technology & Products, Inc.  specially designed and fabricated hundreds of altered Type A variable spring hangers in order to accommodate the special travel and spring rate needed to support the furnace tubes of a hydrogen reformer in Venezuela. In order to accommodate customer specified travel and spring rate, modified spring coils were required. With a travel of 8 7/8, the variable spring hanger casing lengths were increased from the standard size of 32 inches to over 6 feet long. The calculated spring rate is 79 lb/sq in for an operating load of 2,804 lbs. and installed load of 3,505 lbs. The housings are coated with a heat resistant paint, which protects the spring coils from corrosion and high temperatures of the furnace area.
