6000 lb. Load Hot Shoe with Adjustable Lateral Stops for an Oil Refinery

Drawing of Custom Hot Shoe

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently assisted in the design and fabrication of a special hot shoe with adjustable lateral stops for an oil refinery in LA. The shoe assembly is designed to support loads up to 6000 lb. and to guide pipes that may reach up to 1200°F. The hot shoe consists of a 12 thick mineral wool insulation, an inner clamp surrounded by four load transfer plates, an outer guiding clamp, and four guide assemblies with PTFE, 25% glass filled, slide plates. The load transfer plates provide support and prevent damage to the insulation between the inner and outer guiding clamp.

The guide assemblies (comprised of the four guides on the shoe and the adjustable stops) are designed to account for lateral, vertical, and axial movement. PTFE, 25% glass filled, slide plates are used to minimize friction caused by movement between the shoe and the adjustable stops. The adjustable stops are fabricated from a 1 x 12 x 19 carbon steel plate with four rods and two angles. These allow for flexibility in adjusting the distance/gap within each guide assembly to control movement.

Cryogenic Supports with Permali Block

The above design shows cryogenic pipe supports with Permali block. Permali block is a laminated phenolic material from layers of wood impregnated under vacuum and heat with synthetic resin. These pipe shoes can be designed to restrain very high axial, lateral and vertical loads. These shoes are used for LNG pipeline sliding supports with TEF slide plates.

28" dia. Hot Shoes for a Natural Gas Plant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently designed and manufactured twenty 28" dia. Hot shoes (high temperature pre-insulated pipe supports) for a natural gas plant in Massachusetts. These supports are assembled with a 5" thick high-density Calcium silicate insulation layer, in addition to stainless steel, Kaowool, and PTFE, 25% glass filled, slide plate materials. The supports are designed to support loads from 25 kips-50 kips at an operating temperature of 1800 degrees F. The shoes also allow for a travel of 7" where applicable. PT&P also designed and fabricated rod hangers with variable spring supports for this project.

Hot Shoes for a Chemical Plant in Texas

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 60 Marinite® hot shoes for a chemical plant in Texas.

These hot shoes are composed of Marinite®(high-density calcium silicate) and carbon steel.  They were made for 8 NPS with 7 insulation.  These shoes are used on steam lines, effluent lines, and any other process lines where it's imperative that thermal energy is not lost through the pipe support.  Tests were performed to show outer skin temperature at operating conditions.

Various Sized Cold Shoes for a Chemical Plant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 250 variable sized cold shoes for a chemical plant in Texas.

These cold shoes are designed for cryogenic (low temperature) pipelines where direct contact with the pipe cannot be made.  These shoes come with two pieces, top and bottom, and are made of polyurethane foam.  They are then wrapped in vapor barriers, covered with a protective shield and placed in a pipe saddle.

Inside of the Pipe Anchor

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactured cryogenic pipe anchors for gas refinery in Savannah, Georgia. The pipe anchors were fabricated with stainless steel and insulated with polyurethane foam. In order to prevent cold pumping, better known as temperature driven moisture penetration, polyurethane foam was poured around a stainless steel reinforcing pad. The ten cryogenic pipe anchors were fabricated to support 4-inch, 8-inch and 12-inch pipes. PT&P’s pre-insulated pipe supports department is devoted to the production of pipe insulation productions for both hot and cold applications.

Color-Coded Insulating Components

Color-Coded Insulating Components

The pictures above show pipe supports designed for a system with very cold operating temperatures. The insulating components are polyurethane, which are inside the galvanized steel exterior of the support. At the top left of the picture are the color-coded polyurethane components of a “cold shoe” for a 60” pipe, the top (green) is 14 lb/ft3 density and the bottom (orange) is 20 lb/ft3 density. The higher density material has greater compressive strength but it is a better conductor of heat. The other pictures show finished shoes which have white coating over the polyurethane. Hot shoes, designed for high operating temperatures, are similar but usually have different insulating materials.

Bonding Strength Testing for Low Temp Pipe Support Application

Posted by Ra Bass on Jan 06, 1993
Bonding Strength Testing for Low Temperature Application Adhesive

Bonding Strength Testing for Low Temperature Application Adhesive

In the picture above, a test of the bonding strength of an adhesive designed for low temperature applications is being conducted. Polyurethane strips have been bonded to metal strips which are pulled apart in a load cell which measures the force applied.

Polyurethane is often specified for components of insulated pipe shoes and supports for cold temperature applications. Polyurethane provides both insulation and load carrying capacity for pipes when it is bonded to a metal pipe shoe or support. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. fabricates all types of insulated pipe supports. The type of insulation specified depends on the temperature profile the pipe will experience and the loads and movement at the point of application.

PT&P provides testing services and pipe support maintenance in the field. Let us help you today!
